One thing about Indian women. When they became interested in a man they generally weren’t shy about letting him know. Fargo had no sooner hunkered than Morning Star rested a warm hand on his.

“We have a while before Big Elk comes to see what is taking us. I would like to hear more about you. Where you are from. What you do when you are not working for the bluecoats. Things you like.”

“I told you. I like to taste berries.” So saying, Fargo pulled her close and glued his mouth to hers. She stiffened in surprise and placed her hands on his chest to push him off but gradually the tension in her voluptuous body drained away. Her fingers lightly scraped the nape of his neck. When he pulled back she was breathing heavily and her cheeks were dark.

“You take too much for granted.” Morning Star’s right hand fell to her knife. “I have stabbed men for less. Do not do that again unless I say you can.”

“You wanted to get to know me.” Fargo pulled her close a second time. She had said no but her eyes were saying yes, and her posture, with her back arched and her breasts jutting against her buckskin dress, was as inviting as an engraved invitation. He kissed her. In the bat of an eye he had taken several strides and was pretending to scan the slopes below. The dust cloud was about where he had seen it last. So were several stick figures on stick horses. He heard Morning Star say a few words in Arapaho, and turned.

Big Elk had emerged.

Fargo knew the warrior had snuck through the woods to spy on them. The question was: How much had Big Elk seen? The Arapaho’s expression was hard to read.

Morning Star rose, smiling. Whatever she said to Big Elk elicited no reply. She spoke again, and his answer was slow in coming. She then said something that caused him to whirl and stomp off like a mad moose.

“What was that all about?”

“He wanted to know why I was sitting down. I told him I was resting and he accused me of liking you more than I should.” Morning Star smoothed her dress. “He forgets I am a grown woman and can do as I please.”

Big Elk wasn’t gone long. He returned on horseback and rode by Morning Star without looking at her.

Fargo stepped in front of the warrior’s horse. “Where does he think he’s going?”

Morning Star posed the question. “He says he is
